Quranic Verses on Hifz

Al-Baqarah 2:121

"Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They are the ones who believe in it."

Al-Hijr 15:9

"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Dhikr (Qur'an), and indeed, We will be its guardian."

Al-Qamar 54:17

"And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?"

Al-Muzzammil 73:4

"And recite the Qur'an with measured recitation."

Prophetic Traditions (Ahadith)

Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim

"The one who is proficient in reciting the Qur'an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels), and he who recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best, will have a double reward."

Sahih Muslim

"Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection."

Sahih al-Bukhari

"The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it."

Sunan Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhi

"It will be said to the companion of the Qur'an: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse you recite."

Declaration of Faith
Lā ilāha illallāhu Muḥammadur rasūlullāh
"There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah"
The Two Parts
Lā ilāha illallāh
The Declaration of Tawhid
This phrase is composed of two parts — a negation (lā ilāha, "there is no deity") and an affirmation (illallāh, "except Allah"). It negates every false object of worship — idols, desires, worldly authorities — and affirms that Allah alone holds the right to be worshipped. It is the bedrock of Islamic monotheism (Tawhid) and the lens through which a Muslim views all of existence.
Muḥammadun rasūlullāh
The Declaration of Prophethood
This phrase establishes that the only way to worship Allah correctly is through the guidance brought by His final prophet, Muhammad (ﷺ). It entails loving him, following his Sunnah, accepting his teachings, and recognising him as the seal of all prophets — after whom no new prophecy or divine revelation shall come.
Seven Conditions Shuroot ash-Shahada
العلم
Ilm — Knowledge
To know what the Shahada affirms and negates: that Allah alone deserves worship and that all other objects of worship are false. Ignorance of its meaning invalidates it.
Yaqeen — Certainty
To hold this belief with absolute certainty and without a trace of doubt. "The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His messenger and then doubt not." (49:15)
القبول
Qubool — Acceptance
To accept the implications of the Shahada wholeheartedly — not merely to acknowledge it intellectually. Iblis knew of Allah's existence but refused to accept His command.
Inqiyad — Submission
To submit to all that the Shahada requires — the obligations of Islam — outwardly and inwardly, without picking and choosing what to obey.
Sidq — Truthfulness
To utter it sincerely from the heart, not merely with the tongue. The hypocrites (munafiqeen) pronounced the Shahada outwardly, but their hearts rejected it.
Ikhlas — Sincerity
To dedicate all worship solely to Allah, free from any shirk (associating partners with Allah) or riya (showing off). Actions are judged by their sincerity.
Mahabbah — Love
To love Allah, His messenger, and this declaration itself — and to feel aversion to anything that contradicts it. Love is what gives the Shahada its life and meaning.
Quranic Basis
Surah Āl ʿImrān 3:18
"Allah bears witness that there is no deity except Him — and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge — maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
Surah Muḥammad 47:19
"So know that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women."
Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ 112:1–4
"Say: He is Allah, [who is] One — Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255 — Āyat al-Kursī
"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep."
Hadith on Its Virtues
"Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise."
Sahih Muslim
"Whoever says 'Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu'l-mulku wa lahu'l-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr' one hundred times in a day — it will be for him the equivalent of freeing ten slaves, and one hundred good deeds will be recorded and one hundred bad deeds erased, and it will be a shield against Shaytan for that day."
Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
"The best of remembrance is Lā ilāha illallāh, and the best of supplication is Alhamdulillāh."
Sunan al-Tirmidhi
"Whoever witnesses that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah will forbid the Fire from consuming him."
Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
Historical Context
The Message of All Prophets
The Shahada is not unique to the prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ) — it is the eternal message sent through every prophet, from Adam (AS) through Ibrahim (AS), Musa (AS), and Isa (AS). Every messenger called their people to Tawhid: to single out Allah alone in worship and to reject all false deities.
The First Muslims
When the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) received his first revelation in 610 CE in the Cave of Hirāʾ, a small community formed around the message. The first to accept the Shahada were Khadijah (RA), his wife; ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (RA), his cousin; Abū Bakr (RA), his closest friend; and Zayd ibn Ḥārithah (RA), his freed slave. These early believers faced severe persecution in Mecca for their declaration.
Bilal and the Courage of the Shahada
Among the most famous examples of steadfastness is Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ (RA), an Abyssinian slave whose master tortured him under the blazing Arabian sun, laying heavy rocks on his chest. Yet Bilāl cried out "Aḥad! Aḥad!" — "One! One!" — refusing to renounce the Shahada. He was later freed by Abū Bakr (RA) and had the honour of becoming the first muezzin of Islam, calling the Adhan from the mosque in Madinah.
The Shahada in Daily Life
The Shahada is woven into the fabric of Muslim life. It is whispered into the ear of every newborn. It resounds in the Adhan five times daily. It is the gateway into Islam — uttering it sincerely before witnesses is how one becomes a Muslim. It is sought as the last utterance before death. It is inscribed on the flag of Saudi Arabia. And it is the axis around which all of Islamic belief and practice revolves.

Quranic Rulings on Zakat

Al-Baqarah 2:43

"And establish prayer and give Zakat, and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]."

At-Tawbah 9:103

"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke blessings upon them. Indeed, your blessing is reassurance for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."

At-Tawbah 9:60

"Zakah is only for the poor and the needy, and those who administer it, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for [freeing] those in bondage, and for those in debt, and for the cause of Allah, and for the wayfarer — an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."

Al-Bayyinah 98:5

"And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give Zakat. And that is the correct religion."

Prophetic Traditions (Ahadith)

Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

"Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying Zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan."

Sahih al-Bukhari

"Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. It will encircle his neck and say: 'I am your wealth, I am your treasure.'"

Sahih Muslim

"Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives another but that Allah increases his honour, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah but that Allah raises his status."

Sunan Abu Dawud & Sunan al-Nasa'i

"Protect your wealth by giving Zakat, treat your sick with charity, and repel calamity with supplication."

About Zakat

What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity on wealth above the nisab threshold held for a full lunar year (haul). It purifies wealth and supports those in need.

The Haul Condition

Your wealth must meet or exceed the nisab on both your Zakat anniversary date and the day you pay. Temporary dips below nisab during the year do not void the obligation if both dates are met.

Who Must Pay?

Zakat is obligatory on every Muslim adult who possesses wealth above the nisab at the end of the haul. In the Hanafi school, children's wealth held in trust is also zakatable.

Where Does It Go?

Allah mentions eight categories in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor, the needy, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, debtors, in the path of Allah, and travellers.

Al-Qadr 97:1–3

"Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Power. And what can make you know what is the Night of Power? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."

Prophetic Traditions (Ahadith)

Sahih al-Bukhari 1904

"The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is more beloved to Allah than the scent of musk."

Sahih Muslim 1151

"Every deed of the son of Adam is multiplied — a good deed ten times to seven hundred times — except fasting, for it is for Me, and I will give reward for it."

Al-Hashr 59:18

"O you who believe, fear Allah. And let every soul consider what it has sent forth for tomorrow. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is fully aware of what you do."

Aal-Imran 3:190–191

"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for those of understanding — who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth."

At-Tahrim 66:8

"O you who believe, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow."

Al-Baqarah 2:152

"So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me."

Prophetic Traditions (Ahadith)

Tirmidhi — Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)

"Hold yourselves accountable before you are held accountable, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you."

Sunan Ibn Majah 4260

"The intelligent one is he who disciplines himself and works for what comes after death. The foolish one follows his whims and vain desires while expecting good things from Allah."

Sunan Abu Dawud 4918

"A believer is the mirror of his brother. A believer is the brother of his brother. He guards him against loss and protects him in his absence."

Al-Hakim / Al-Bayhaqi (Sahih)

"Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you become occupied, and your life before your death."

The Four Pillars of Islamic Reflection

Muhasaba (محاسبة) — Self-Accounting

The practice of auditing one's own intentions, words, and deeds at day's end. Scholars consider it an obligation of the heart. Umar (RA) said: "Hold yourselves accountable before you are held accountable."

Tafakkur (تفكر) — Deep Contemplation

Reflecting on the signs of Allah in creation, the Quran, and one's own soul. Ibn al-Qayyim called tafakkur "the key to all goodness," and the Quran repeatedly calls those who reflect "the people of understanding" (ulu al-albab).

Tawbah (توبة) — Sincere Repentance

More than asking forgiveness — tawbah means genuinely returning to Allah with remorse for past wrongs, ceasing the action, and resolving not to return to it. It is both an act of love and a purification of the soul.

Muraqaba (مراقبة) — Watchful Awareness

The state of constant awareness that Allah observes all things. It is the station of Ihsan described in Hadith Jibril: "Worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Purity
Taharah — Islamic Purification
✦ Foundation of Faith

Al-Maidah 5:6

"O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves."

Al-Baqarah 2:222

"Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

At-Tawbah 9:108

"Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves."

Al-Muddaththir 74:4–5

"And purify your garments. And avoid all pollution."

Prophetic Traditions (Ahadith)

Sahih Muslim 223

"Cleanliness is half of faith, and Alhamdulillah fills the scale, and SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah fill what is between the heavens and the earth."

Sunan Abu Dawud 618 · Tirmidhi 3

"The key to prayer is cleanliness (taharah), its opening is the takbir, and its closing is the salam."

Sahih al-Bukhari 136 · Sahih Muslim 246

"My ummah will be called on the Day of Resurrection with bright faces and bright hands and feet because of the traces of wudu. Whoever among you can lengthen his radiance, let him do so."

Sahih al-Bukhari 887 · Sahih Muslim 252

"Use the siwak (miswak), for it purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord."

Purification Guides

🤲
Wudu — Ablution
Required for prayer, touching the Mushaf
  1. Wash the face once — from hairline to chin, ear to ear
  2. Wash both arms including the elbows once
  3. Wipe (masah) over at least a quarter of the head once
  4. Wash both feet including the ankles once
  • Begin with Bismillah and the niyyah (intention)
  • Wash hands three times before starting
  • Use miswak (toothstick)
  • Rinse mouth (madmadah) three times
  • Rinse nose (istinshaq) three times
  • Perform each washing three times
  • Begin with the right side
  • Run fingers through beard (khilal al-lihyah)
  • Run water between fingers and toes
  • Recite the shahada after completing wudu
  • Anything that exits from the front or back passages
  • Deep sleep where consciousness is lost
  • Fainting or intoxication
  • Flowing blood or pus from a wound (Hanafi view)
🚿
Ghusl — Full Bath
Required for major ritual impurity (janabah)
  • Marital relations (janabah)
  • Ejaculation, even without intercourse
  • End of menstruation (hayd)
  • End of post-natal bleeding (nifas)
  • Embracing Islam (for a new Muslim)
  • Friday prayer — highly emphasised Sunnah
  • Death — performed by others as fardh kifayah
  1. Make intention (niyyah) and begin with Bismillah
  2. Wash both hands three times
  3. Wash the private parts thoroughly
  4. Perform complete Wudu
  5. Pour water over the entire body three times, beginning with the right side
  6. Ensure water reaches the roots of hair, skin folds, navel, and all body parts
🤲🏽
Tayammum — Dry Ablution
When water is unavailable or harmful
  • Water is completely unavailable
  • Using water would cause harm to health (illness, injury)
  • Water is needed for drinking or survival
  • Water is available but access is not possible (e.g. fear of danger)
  1. Make intention (niyyah) and say Bismillah
  2. Strike clean earth, dust, or unglazed stone with both palms
  3. Wipe the entire face once
  4. Strike again and wipe both arms to the wrists

Tayammum is invalidated by everything that breaks Wudu, and also by finding water or becoming able to use it.

💧

About Taharah

What is Taharah?

Taharah (طهارة) is ritual and physical purity. Islam divides it into two: freedom from physical impurities (najasah) on the body, clothes, and place of prayer; and freedom from states of ritual impurity (hadath). Both are prerequisites for valid prayer.

Minor vs Major Impurity

A minor ritual impurity (hadath asghar) is lifted by Wudu — caused by natural bodily functions, sleep, and unconsciousness. A major impurity (hadath akbar) requires Ghusl — caused by marital relations, ejaculation, and the end of menstruation or post-natal bleeding.

Purity & Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The key to prayer is cleanliness." No prayer is valid without Wudu or Ghusl where required. Wudu is also required to touch the Mushaf. On the Day of Resurrection, the traces of wudu will be a source of light and honour for the believer.

The Spiritual Dimension

Taharah is not merely physical. Calling it "half of faith" points to the inner dimension: purifying the heart from sins, arrogance, and spiritual heedlessness through tawbah (repentance), dhikr, and sincere worship. Physical and spiritual purity are deeply intertwined in Islam.
